THE REVOLUTION WILL NOT BE TELEVISED
DIRECTED AND PHOTOGRAPHED BY
KIM BARTLEY AND DONNACHA O'BRIAIN
IRELAND, 2003
74 MINUTES

IN SPANISH WITH ENGLISH SUBTITLES

HUGO CHAVEZ ELECTED PRESIDENT OF VENEZUELA IN 1998, IS A COLORFUL,
UNPREDICTABLE FOLK HERO, beloved by his nation's working class and a
tough-as-nails, quixotic opponent to the power structure that would see him
deposed. Two independent filmmakers were inside the presidential palace on April 11, 2002, when he was forcibly removed from office. They were also
present 48 hours later when, remarkably, he returned to power amid cheering aides. Their film records what was probably history's shortest-lived coup d'état. It's a unique document about political muscle and an extraordinary portrait of the man The Wall Street Journal credits with making Venezuela "Washington‚s biggest Latin American headache after the old standby, Cuba."

Should I write about my political views; screaming frustrations and hopes? Should I tell you about my past? Should I lie or tell the truth? Should I write what I think most people want to read; based on my cultural understanding of my environment? Why should anyone care about my personal life? I'm certainly not worthy of any special mention; nor are those whom – often -- are mentioned specially. The people who’re responsible for the things that make our lives better are rarely [make that extremely rarely (if ever)] mentioned.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t mean to sound self-depreciative; I happen to like myself. It’s just that I don’t think I’m better than the majority of people on this planet; rather, I find myself to be equal to most, and circumstanceually lesser than a few.

I’m a seeker of truth; mostly because I find myself living amongst a culture of mass confusion. The United States of America, where I live, has (in its current form) so mechanized the process of corruption that it is now not only inevitable, but practically irreversible. Few Americans today understand where their freedoms came from and how they were obtained. American freedoms were not won (nor were they defended) on foreign soil; they were won here at home. The blood shed for American freedoms stained American soil, as it still does today.

We humans have the ability and the resources to live together in harmony.

I’m not a hippy; whatever they were.

I’m a realist. I look for information outside of my cultural boundaries; I weigh that information against all of my other information and make the most logical conclusion; we’re most likely the same in this respect. However, I’m dissimilar from many of my neighbors. Dissimilar in that I have sought information outside of what is culturally and economically acceptable. Furthermore, I’m more than willing to give up the benefits that come from jingoism -- of which there are many (hell, I could be president) – and instead, focus on building a world that is based not on the profit of the few (through the destruction of the many), but on what we (humanity) are capable of.

What is humanity capable of? We’re certainly capable of equality; considering Earths vast natural resources (now being wasted), and our many other capabilities.

Based on a detailed knowledge of our species “nature,” I’m certain that unless there is future equality, it is certain there will be no future.

Naturally, I’m working towards a lasting future; whether or not humanity succeeds depends mostly on people like you.
